reddragdiva	12:50a	Apache on cPanel weirdness: "combined combined combined." If you have this problem, where you can't get anything out of awstats and it turns out to be because your Apache logs contain nothing but the word "combined", once per line, over and over — this is because cPanel b0rked your httpd.conf and left out the LogFormat lines. Apache then presumes the word "combined" at the end of the CustomLog line is not a direction on how to log, but the actual log format. Cut'n'paste them from httpd.conf.orig and somehow beat cPanel into putting them into its RCS. (cPanel is source-available proprietary software to make LAMP stupid. Our host is at the stage where I'm very glad I have years of expertise beating Apache around, and sudo.) (4 Comments |Comment on this)

reddragdiva	9:19p	It's the climb. NewsTechnica: UK announces clampdown on "science". So, Friday night I was drunk down the pub with nyecamden, genetikayos, a laptop and wifi, and I slipped on a credit card and bought NewsTechnica.com. (I was actually quite surprised this was available — pretty much everything has been squatted.) I spent yesterday setting up the latest WordPress, importing the text from the previous site and tweaking the theme within an inch of its life. (It's a freebie they give away to entice you to buy the commercial version. Spelling errors in the configuration dialogues, cut'n'paste coding and localisation is something that happens to other people. I'll be uploading my version when I've finished.) Along the way, I wrote my first MySQL updating program in PHP. Today I had to leave behind the technical wizardry and do the hard bit: write something. A decent start, I hope. (today.com has cut pay in half and doubled the advertising in its obnoxiousness. I went to NotN yesterday and got a floating ad in the middle of the page. FUCK OFF, DIE. They're clearly running out of money and getting desperate. FLOATING ADS EQUALS FAIL. I might bother with ads on the new site, or I might not — NotN was netting me about £30/month; I make approximately 120 times that working a proper job.) So. Update your bookmarks and links! reddragdiva	7:40p	Hard left. Rocknerd: lupus; Hell freezes over. SNOW!!! Last night I got mugged, for the first time ever. Five odious little scrotes after what they could get. I'm fine, just very pissed off. HULK WRITE STERN LETTER. One punched me (they scattered when I swung back), breaking a filling. They got my headphones. My laptop hit the pavement and has a pile of scuffs and a really bad hole and crack in the case, but that's why work has insurance. The police popped around and were very nice and helpful. Dentist on Friday. arkady bought me replacement Skullcandies off Amazon :-D I stopped at the poundshop today and got £1 in-ear 'phones. They're pink with diamantes on them. "Stylish earphones with fab bling!" says the package. Surprisingly, they're complete shit. Who'da thunk? Lunch with nyecamden today. He was just the tonic. We have shown Freda "here is the church here, is the steeple, open the doors and there's all the people." BEST GAME EVER, BETTER THAN TV. (22 Comments |Comment on this)

Or do I just need to reconsider the way I approach it? I suspect a mixture of all that. I also suspect a fundamental shift has been going on, and maybe the roads back have closed. Maybe. reddragdiva	8:48p	Last of the famous international playboys. Rocknerd: All praise the Hammond B-3; Have yourself a merry little Christmas. I finally got the Vagabonds photos up! Darker than usual. These aren't as good as I'd like, basically because I don't know my way around this camera. In any case, the camera's getting crappier. The play button doesn't work reliably and it keeps switching on in my pocket. I think it was built on a Friday afternoon. Must get around to returning it. Freda is getting cleverer. She can reliably count to two and unreliably count to five or six! The CBeebies magazines are not only colourful and attractive, they're reasonably useful for parents to read to bright offspring and teach them how to match and count things and so on. today.com is jumping and leaping and orbiting the shark. I need a new domain for News of the News. Probably a new name, as all the obvious domains for NotN are taken by domain spammers and only unobvious variants appear to be left. Name ideas please! reddragdiva	10:39p	All fool's day. I have written a new Uncyclopedia article. I wish to propagate the meme "blue-suited spirochetes." Our elderly ex-stray cat Tabs has just had his first vet visit since we got him! He got blood tests, will need his teeth cleaned and needs an X-ray. He has three meals a day, doesn't put on weight and has chronic diarrhoea. He has a heart murmur. His back legs have muscle wastage. Old cats, eh? The vet bill means Tabs is arkady's present this Christmas, birthday and Bosič. Good thing I have money now. Anyone got a spare drumkit they could lend us? The younger teen has formed a band (exercising the musical talent inherited from both parents) and their drummer doesn't actually have a kit of her own ... (8 Comments |Comment on this)
